Launching late October 2026

A free, evergreen capture-the-flag (CTF) open lab built around the protocols and tools you already work with—J1939, ECUs, telematics, diagnostic ports. Progressively harder scenarios. No hacking background required.

Fleet Technology Has Outpaced Fleet Training

Modern trucks are software-defined systems. J1939, telematics, ELDs, and diagnostic ports carry real cybersecurity exposure—but the people maintaining and securing them rarely get hands-on practice with it. The options that exist today don’t quite fit:

  • Automotive CTFs are built for researchers, focused on passenger vehicles, and often limited to a single event.
  • General cybersecurity training platforms are evergreen, but generic—they don’t speak J1939 or fleet operations.

Nobody had built an evergreen, transportation-specific, practitioner-level CTF. So we did.

A Hands-On Lab, Not a Tournament

The Fleet Cyber Challenge is a free, always-open, capture-the-flag lab. Each scenario gets progressively more challenging, and every one is modeled on a situation a fleet team could actually run into—no virtual machine (VM) setup, no experience required to get started.

All scenarios use simulated environments and fictional data—
nothing here touches a live vehicle or production system.

Built for The People Who Keep Fleets Running

Fleet IT

You already read the threat reports. Now practice defending against what’s in them. The Fleet Cyber Challenge gives you a safe, sandboxed way to build hands-on skill against real attack patterns without touching production systems.

Fleet Technicians

The truck you’re diagnosing today runs software. Learn the security side of it in the time you already have: bite-sized challenges built to fit around a shift, not a multi-day workshop.

Asset Cybersecurity Researchers

This isn’t built for you—it’s built so the industry you research can finally speak your language. If you know someone earlier in their journey toward asset or vehicle cybersecurity, this is where they should start.

Built by the Industry’s Own Trusted Association

NMFTA is neutral, trusted by motor carriers, and technically deep enough to turn its own cybersecurity research into a real learning tool. The scenarios are grounded in NMFTA’s actual work:

  • The Heavy Vehicle Cybersecurity Assessment and Testing Tool
  • Published vulnerability findings, including a CVE on trailer brake-controller compromise

No prizes. No pay-to-play. No vendor pitch at the end—just a credible, sandboxed place to build a skill.

Every Mile Marker is a Milestone

Complete a challenge, earn a Mile Marker—a numbered badge you can download as you progress. There’s no leaderboard to climb and nothing to win; it’s recognition for a skill you actually built, worth putting on a résumé or sharing on LinkedIn.

Built the Safe Way

Every challenge runs on simulated environments and fictional datasets. Nothing here is a live hacking exercise, a production system, or a real vehicle so it’s safe to explore, break, and learn from without any risk to your fleet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There’s no cost to participate, and no email required to start your first challenge.

Do I need any cybersecurity or hacking experience?

No. The Fleet Cyber Challenge is built for Fleet IT and Fleet Technicians first, with no prior experience assumed. Scenarios get progressively harder as you go.

Is this a competition?

No. There’s no time limit, no leaderboard, and no prizes. It’s an evergreen lab you can work through at your own pace.

What happens with my information?

Around the midpoint of your progress, you’ll be invited to a short, optional survey. It doesn’t require your email.

I’m a researcher… is this challenging enough for me?

Probably not—it’s intentionally entry-level. But if you know someone earlier in their cybersecurity journey, this is a credible place to point them.
