Still Unsure if an NMFC Item Changed? Here’s How to Check in Seconds

Sarah Cottrell - September 23, 2025

When the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC®) changes went into effect on July 19, 2025, they marked a transformative moment for the less-than-truckload (LTL) industry. The most exciting changes included foundational improvements such as introducing a 13-tier density-based model that replaced decades-old classifications as well as removing outdated and redundant item numbers and replacing them with more intuitive, density-based standards.

The reaction? We’ll let you be the judge:

“Feedback has been consistent in that this is exactly the direction that the NMFTA had to go in order to update the NMFC and make classification of freight simpler for the industry,” said Keith Peterson, vice president of operations for NMFTA.

With the help of the NMFTA’s newly launched ClassIT+™, teams across the industry from carriers to shippers to third-party logistics providers (3PLs) are quickly adjusting to their system and processes to align with the new NMFC standards.

If you’re in that phase right now, here’s the good news:

Checking whether an item has changed doesn’t have to be complicated.
In fact, it takes just seconds.

Your Go-To Method for Verifying Item Changes

With ClassIT+, the entire verification process has been reimagined, offering intuitive features to help you see what’s changed. You don’t need to know the exact item number or term. You don’t need to guess where it might have moved. You just… check out what’s new.

Step 1: Review and Search the What’s New Page

The What’s New page is a one-stop place to see NMFC Data updates when they occur, which ensures that your data stays accurate with real-time alerts. Quickly search for an item to see how it’s changed or easily scroll through the list of created, amended, and canceled items. It’s that easy!

Step 4: Search and Save It for Later

If you find yourself searching for the same item numbers or descriptions over and over again, you’re in luck! ClassIT+ has a built-in Favorite feature that allows you to easily save your search results for future use.

From your search result, simply click the star  icon to save it to your Favorites. You can even share your favorites with your Company Common. Once saved, you’ll always know when updates impact your favorites through the What’s New feature.
