Board Member Spotlight: Mike Zupon, Ward Transport & Logistics
As part of our Board Member Spotlight series, we’re pleased to feature Mike Zupon of Ward Transport & Logistics. This series highlights the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.’s® (NMFTA)® newest board members helping guide the future of the association, and offering a closer look at their experience, perspectives, and vision for the industry.
In this Q&A, Mike shares insights from his career in the less-than-truckload (LTL) sector, his approach to leadership, and what he looks forward to contributing during his time on the NMFTA board.
What is your background in the trucking industry? How did you get your start?
Fortunately, my warehouse experience played a key role in my hiring at Ward. On the trucking side, I gained exposure to multiple areas over time—including TL, brokerage, dedicated services, and warehousing—but LTL has been the primary focus of my experience.
After college, I worked for a Fortune 500 company as a COBOL programmer (with some Assembler experience) and Assistant Manager in a warehouse environment. While the role provided a strong foundation, there was limited opportunity for advancement. I later responded to an opening at Ward for an Assembler/COBOL programmer, which turned out to be a pivotal move.
Ward has long been a strong employer in our community, and over the years I’ve had the opportunity to grow within the organization—progressing from MIS Manager to IT Director, and now serving as Vice President of Technology.
What excites you most about this role?
The opportunity to make a difference, whether it be small or large, and to interact with folks from other companies. Also, the ability to reach out to the new people I meet.
What does “community” mean to you within our association?
Community, to me, is primarily about building stronger relationships with the NMFTA team. Over the past four years, they have been incredibly helpful, and I truly appreciate how approachable and collaborative they are. It’s refreshing to work with and learn from them, and I wouldn’t be in my current position without their support.
Secondly, the more meetings I attend, the more I get to know my peers and their counterparts across various trucking companies. I value their perspectives and the shared insights that come from those interactions.
Where do you see artificial intelligence having the biggest impact in LTL operations over the next 3–5 years?
There is no doubt that AI will significantly enhance both the operations and customer experience. Our AI initiatives are closely aligned with corporate objectives, driving cost reduction and improving overall efficiency. However, AI will cause major issues in cybersecurity.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work? Describe your ideal day.
Start the day with a morning workout or a competitive basketball run, followed by a walk with my dog—either along the beach or through a state park. In the afternoon, I’ll get in a round of golf, 9 or 18 holes, then unwind with some beach time and finish the day with a good dinner.
What is one item on your bucket list that you’re most excited to check off?
A two- or three-week African safari (just a sightseeing tour only). A close second is revisiting England. There was so much history to take in; 8 days were not enough!
