What You Missed at Truckload 2024 – NMFTA Session

The Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) Annual Convention, Truckload 2024: Nashville, offered attendees the chance to hear from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) staff, Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), United States Secret Service, and a cyber insurance pro all in one place.

Attendees left Nashville, TN with a better understanding of NMFTA, its cybersecurity research and outreach, as well as how government organizations can assist when cybercriminals attack your business.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 26, NMFTA hosted a panel discussion “Cyber Security in Trucking Today” which featured insights from:

  • James “Artie” Crawford, MS, CISSP, CISM, Cybersecurity Coordinator, Region 4, Nashville, TN, at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)
  • Joshua Fisher, Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, at the US Secret Service – Nashville Field Office
  • Adam V. Abresch, CIC, CCIC, Executive Vice President – Cyber Solutions at Acrisure
  • Joe Ohr, Chief Operating Officer at NMFTA

The session, led by NMFTA’s Ohr, was a must-attend for any industry professional navigating today’s challenging supply chain landscape. With cyber threats on the rise, the panel equipped truckload carriers and industry suppliers in the audience with the knowledge and tools to strengthen their defenses.

Given the influx in cyberattacks against the trucking industry, CISA’s Crawford shared with attendees at the start of the session, “We’re truly here to help. If CISA is calling you, please take our call. There is a reason that we’re attempting to reach you.”

To better combat these threat actors, the panelists urged carriers to have conversations and an open line of communication as an industry, peer-to-peer. “Ask yourselves, ‘What can we do to make this more of a team sport?’” said Crawford. If your company has fallen victim to a cyberattack, share your knowledge of the attack and your path to resiliency.

The panelists also shared:

🛡️Specific strategies to prevent and protect your organization from cyber threats, with actionable steps to enhance cybersecurity measures.

🛡️ Real-life examples of cybercrimes and how CISA and the Secret Service can help once you’ve become a victim of an attack.

🛡️ The criticality of internet-of-things (IoT) devices, securing them, and why trucking is so critical but unique.

🛡️The importance to teaching staff members, employees, and/or professional truck drivers the dangers of attacks (such as phishing emails) and how to mitigate risks.

🛡️Takeaways from NMFTA’s 2024 Trucking Cybersecurity Trends Report and a call to action to attend NMFTA’s Cybersecurity Conference this October.
