The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) announced today the public release of a technical report entitled Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) Cybersecurity Threats, Use Cases and Requirements for Medium and Heavy Duty Electric Vehicles. The technical report was prepared for NMFTA by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe), who also led the working group that developed the cybersecurity requirements.

The working group was comprised of diverse industry stakeholders that included federal agencies, electric truck OEMs, charging station vendors, utilities, network aggregators, trade associations, standards bodies, international government agencies and cybersecurity researchers. Together they identified 62 XFC cybersecurity requirements for XFC stations, XFC vendors/network operators and grid operators. The threats, use cases and requirements are specific to medium and heavy duty electric vehicle XFC systems. They are intended to be used as a starting point for the stakeholders in this quickly growing, specialized niche, to develop a more robust and thoroughly vetted set of standards. As such, the requirements were built on existing, relevant international standards and best practices.

The threats, use cases, infrastructure needs and impacts for Class 7 and Class 8 Medium Duty (MD) and Heavy Duty (HD) commercial vehicles, in particular, differ greatly from general automotive electric vehicle applications. Due to the fact that XFCs will operate in the 350kW to 1MW+ range, a cybersecurity attack could cause a significant disruption to the electric power grid.

The technical report is available for use under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License and can be accessed from NMFTA’s GitHub repository at https://github.com/nmfta-repo/nmfta-hvcs-xfc. It is intended for use by commercial vehicle operators, electric truck OEMs, XFC vendors, utilities, standards organizations and other interested stakeholders.
