The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA)™ announced the release of Docket 2025-2 which includes changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC®) system used by those who ship less-than-truckload (LTL) freight.
Incorrect classifications can lead to billing disputes, freight rework, and higher costs. That’s why it’s essential for all NMFC users—carriers, shippers, and third-party logistics providers (3PLs)—to stay aligned with the latest updates and prepare for the go-live date: December 6, 2025.
To help ensure the NMFC continues to evolve in a way that supports clarity, consistency, and cost-effective shipping, NMFTA invites industry stakeholders to participate in the decision-making process. On September 29, 2025, the Freight Classification Development Council (FCDC) will hold a public meeting—part of NMFTA’s 2025 Fall Meeting in Washington, DC—to review Docket 2025-2 proposals and stakeholder feedback.
All NMFC users are encouraged to submit feedback, including relevant details about the product’s transportation characteristics—density, handling, stowability, and liability—or proposed packaging materials and methods.
Feedback for Docket 2025-2 can be submitted in many ways:
1. Online: Complete the feedback form at nmfcchanges.com/docket-feedback.
2. Email: Send your feedback directly to fcdc@nmfta.org.
3. Mail: Send a letter to:

“Following the major advancements introduced in Docket 2025-1, this latest docket reflects our continued commitment to simplifying the NMFC and modernizing the LTL freight classification process,” said Keith Peterson, vice president of operations for NMFTA. “These updates may be less extensive, but they are just as vital in supporting an easier, more consistent experience for carriers, 3PLs, and shippers alike.”
