NMFC to be recurring theme at upcoming meetings, events, and conferences as significant changes to occur in 2025
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.’s (NMFTA)™ National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC®) system will be a recurring topic at several industry meetings, events, and conferences to conclude 2024 and industry professionals are encouraged to participate.
The NMFC, established in 1936, is a system that classifies less-than-truckload (LTL) freight into classes based on factors like density, handling, stowability, and liability. This standardized system helps LTL carriers, third-party logistics providers (3PLs), and shippers determine shipping costs. Since LTL freight involves multiple shipments from different shippers sharing space on the same truck, a classification system is necessary to help determine the appropriate shipping rates based on the space and weight each shipment occupies.
During NMFTA’s recent Summer Meeting in Louisville, KY, the association announced major NMFC changes will take effect in the first quarter of 2025. Given the far-reaching impacts of these changes, NMFC users are encouraged to attend the following to learn more:
- LTL Listening Sessions (August 6-8, 2024): NMFTA to host free, online listening sessions for carriers, shippers, and 3PLs.
- TIA Lunch & Learn Webinar (August 28, 2024): NMFTA is partnering with the Transportation Intermediaries Association to host an informative webinar for 3PLs/brokers from 12:00-1:00 pm ET.
- SMC3 LTL Listening Session (September 10, 2024): NMFTA is partnering with SMC3 to host an informative webinar, LTL: Major Changes for the NMFC Classification System in 2025, at 2:00 pm ET.
- Journal of Commerce Inland Distribution (September 30, 2024): Keith Peterson, director of operations for NMFTA, will speak at the Inland Academy: NMFC 101 – Simplifying LTL Classification is Changing session from 11:20 am-12:05 pm CT.
- NMFTA 2024 Fall Meeting (September 29-October 1, 2024): The NMFC will be a topic of discussion throughout the meeting. This meeting is open to NMFTA members only.
- NMFTA 2024 Weighing and Research Advisory Council Meeting (October 9-10, 2024): The NMFC will be a topic of discussion throughout the meeting. This meeting is an invitation-only event.
“The NMFC has advanced over the years by concentrating on equipping industry professionals with the tools, resources, and knowledge necessary to confidently understand classification and accurately assign the correct freight class on a bill of lading,” said Keith Peterson, director of operations for NMFTA. “This greatly aids in preventing reweighs and freight damage. It also simplifies and enhances the accuracy of predicting shipping costs. We aim to ensure that as these changes start to be implemented in 2025, industry professionals are well-prepared.”
