Board Member Spotlight: Chris Thacker, Averitt Express
In our ongoing Board Member Spotlight series, we’re excited to feature Chris Thacker of Averitt, Vice President of Pricing and Traffic. This series highlights the dedicated leaders helping shape the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.’s® (NMFTA)® future, offering a closer look at their professional journeys, perspectives, and the experience they bring to the board.
In this Q&A, Chris shares highlights from his nearly 30-year career in transportation, his appreciation for the people within the industry, and his perspective on how technology and data will continue to drive efficiency in LTL operations.
What is your background in the trucking industry? How did you get your start?
I graduated from Tennessee Tech University with a degree in Finance and planned to go into banking. A friend suggested I talk with Averitt. Averitt made an offer one day before the banking firm and I decided to go into transportation. This summer will be my 30th year with Averitt.
What is your favorite aspect of working in the supply chain industry?
My favorite aspect of our industry is working with so many high character and intelligent people.
How do you hope to connect and engage with members?
The Spring and Fall NMFTA meetings are excellent opportunities to meet members. Those relationships tend to grow as members continue to attend the NMFTA meetings.
Where do you see artificial intelligence having the biggest impact in LTL operations over the next 3–5 years?
Technology will continue to improve our industries’ ability to capture, share and utilize data to improve efficiency and decision making. This includes capturing freight characteristics, improving linehaul efficiency, and managing pricing proposals.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work? Describe your ideal day.
My wife and I really enjoy spending time outdoors. This includes morning runs, visiting area parks, and playing golf with our kids.
What is a favorite book, podcast, or show you’re currently enjoying?
A friend recently shared some history podcasts that I have been enjoying. I tend to watch more television during football season. I enjoyed watching this year’s Masters.
