The NMFTA is pleased to announce that the Docket 2026-2 Disposition Bulletin is now available. This bulletin highlights a significant number of items that have been moved to full scale density for this round.

In simple terms, the freight class for these items will now be based on how much space the shipment occupies in a trailer relative to its weight. This approach provides a more accurate, fair, and consistent classification approach, making it simpler, more measurable, and more aligned with how shipments actually move.

But density doesn’t tell the whole story for every product.

Ladders and shades or blinds are good examples. They can be long, awkward to handle, and hard to load and maneuver around other freight. Based on what we heard from the industry, those items, along with some others based on handling, stowability and liability concerns, were pulled back and will not move to full density at this time. This decision reflects the process working as it should—listening to industry feedback and making adjustments where appropriate.

We also didn’t get the rewrite of Rule 640 across the finish line. Rule 640 covers how to classify a shipment that contains several different articles, such as a pallet with a mix of commodities at different classes. The rewrite did not pass, but we are closer than we have ever been. We are continuing to refine the proposal based on the feedback received and will propose an updated version as soon as possible.

To everyone who took the time to review proposals, join the discussions, and submit comments: thank you. Your feedback was tremendously helpful and directly shaped these outcomes. Keep it coming. The National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC)® is stronger because of it.
