The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.® (NMFTA)™ has launched a new ID verification process to strengthen the integrity of the Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC™) and help protect the freight industry from fraud.
“In today’s evolving risk landscape, identity verification is critical to NMFTA’s commitment of advancing trusted ID verification standards to strengthen transparency, reduce risk of freight fraud, and build industry confidence,” said Joe Ohr, chief operating officer for NMFTA. “We’re verifying that a real person, at a real, physical address, is tied to every SCAC.”
To help ensure the authenticity of your SCAC, you can become verified in one of two ways—for Class 8 carriers, you’ll use your US DOT number and other identifiers; for non-class 8 carriers, you’ll use our new ID verification process. The process for both is quick and simple! Let’s take a closer look at each one.
Class 8 carriers can use their Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) data, such as United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) number and MC number, to verify their SCAC. When verified through FMCSA Data, your safety-record confirmed identification is validated and confirmed, at the time of assignment, renewal, or reinstatement, using data from the FMCSA Company Snapshot website at https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx.
To complete your verification through FMCSA Data, you must enter your current USDOT number and at least one other identifier into the SCAC application or renewal/reinstate forms, where it will be vetted and confirmed.
Becoming verified by ID means that as of the date of SCAC assignment, renewal, or reinstatement, your identity is verified via the SCAC ID verification process. NMFTA utilizes a third-party to confirm verification through a government ID using biometric matching and database validation. At this time, verification through ID is only for non-class 8 carriers.
See the following for more information on what types of ID are accepted:
The SCAC ID verification process is part of the SCAC Apply, Renew, and Reinstate forms and is based on your carrier type. Before you begin, you will need the following items:
To complete the process, you will be asked to capture images of your ID and a live selfie, which will be used for biometric matching against your government ID. The identification used during the SCAC ID verification process must be a match of or be a representative of the SCAC owner.
The process is quick and simple and, once approved, you’ll be redirected back to SCAC where you complete your application, renewal, or reinstatement.
