How to Renew Your SCAC—and What Happens If You Don’t

Debra Edwards - June 18, 2025

Your SCAC code may only be four letters, but it can make or break your ability to move freight. If you’re a carrier, broker, freight forwarder, or any transportation entity operating in the U.S., you likely already rely on a Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC®) to identify your company in digital transactions, customs filings, and logistics systems.

But what happens if your SCAC expires?

Let’s break down how to renew your SCAC before that happens—and what’s at risk if you don’t.

First, a Quick Reminder: What Is a SCAC and Why Does It Matter?

The Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) is a unique two-to-four-letter code used to identify transportation companies. SCACs are required in a wide range of freight and logistics applications—from customs clearance and intermodal rail movements to electronic data interchange (EDI) and U.S. government filings.

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA)™ is the official source and sole issuer of SCAC codes. NMFTA assigns and maintains these codes to ensure the smooth, standardized flow of freight information across the transportation industry.

If you’re linking your business to freight visibility, customs brokers, ports, or digital supply chain platforms—your SCAC is your key identifier.

And like any key, it needs to stay active.

How to Renew Your SCAC: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your SCAC must be renewed annually. Here’s how to keep it current:

  1. Check Your Expiration Date
    You’ll find this on your SCAC assignment certificate or in renewal reminders emailed by NMFTA.
  1. Visit the Official Renewal Portal
    Head to nmfta.org/scac to begin the renewal process. Avoid third-party websites that may charge additional fees or provide outdated information.
  1. Look Up Your Code
    Retrieve your SCAC using your existing code or company information.
  1. Submit Payment
    SCAC renewal requires a nominal annual fee that is determined based on the validity of your account.. Payment can be submitted securely through the NMFTA website.
  1. Download Your Updated Certificate
    You’ll receive an updated certificate immediately after payment. Be sure to share it with customs brokers, rail carriers, and trading partners as needed.

Pro Tip: Set a recurring calendar reminder for the same time each year to stay ahead of expiration.

What Happens If You Don’t Renew?

Letting your SCAC expire can have serious consequences across your business operations:

  • Freight Delays
    Shipments may be delayed or rejected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), intermodal carriers, and EDI systems if your SCAC is inactive.
  • Revenue Loss
    Missed deliveries or suspended transactions can quickly translate into lost income and reputational damage.
  • Compliance Disruption
    SCAC codes are required for filing critical documents with CBP and other agencies. Without a valid code, you may not be able to file.
  • Code Reassignment Risk
    If a SCAC goes unused for an extended period, it may be reassigned to another company. You may need to reapply and lose the continuity of your operations.
  • Need to Reapply from Scratch
    If too much time passes, your expired SCAC can’t be renewed—you’ll have to start over with a new application and code.

Common SCAC Renewal Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these common missteps to ensure your SCAC remains active:

  • Assuming someone else on your team renewed it;
  • Ignoring NMFTA renewal reminder emails;
  • Accidentally using unofficial third-party websites; and
  • Allowing your company contact information to go out-of-date in NMFTA’s system.

Best Practices: Stay Ahead of Renewal

Don’t wait for a crisis to act. These simple habits can keep your SCAC—and your freight—moving:

  • Set a calendar reminder 30 days before your renewal date;
  • Double-check that NMFTA has your current email and business contact details via an OKTA account or connect with customerservice@nmfta.org; and
  • Add SCAC renewal to your company’s annual compliance or vendor checklist.

A valid SCAC isn’t just a requirement—it’s a business enabler. It’s your identifier in a connected, digital freight world.
