NMFTA Perspective Published in Journal of Commerce

Joe Ohr - January 14, 2026

National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.® (NMFTA)™ staff leadership, in collaboration with NMFTA officers, recently published an op-ed in the Journal of Commerce to provide clarity and correct factual inaccuracies related to the NMFTA’s role and the ongoing modernization of the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC)™.

Modernization of the NMFC has always been designed as a phased, industry-informed effort—one shaped by carrier input and grounded in operational reality. When a recent opinion piece mischaracterized that work and NMFTA’s mission, leadership determined it was important to respond directly and transparently.

The published perspective addresses several common misconceptions, including claims about the intent, scope, and adoption of modernization efforts, and reinforces why thoughtful, phased implementation is critical to long-term success.

NMFTA appreciates Journal of Commerce for publishing its viewpoint and ensuring readers have access to accurate, fact-based context. Maintaining clarity and trust in industry dialogue is essential—particularly as the freight sector continues its recovery and prepares for future growth.

While the NMFC remains a cornerstone of NMFTA’s work, the association’s mission extends well beyond less-than-truckload (LTL) freight classification. NMFTA supports the industry through cybersecurity initiatives, freight fraud mitigation, cargo theft intelligence, Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC™), and digital standards development through the Digital Standards Development Council™ (DSDC)™—all aimed at strengthening supply chain resilience and confidence.
