The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA)’s Bouncer appliance has been updated to run on an Apache web server, improving its production capabilities. Although originally developed as an internal tool, NMFTA decided to offer it as a free resource to the transportation community and general public as an additional way to fight hackers and Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors. Instructions for hosting the Bouncer REST API in Apache are posted on NMFTA’s GitHub repository https://github.com/nmfta-repo/nmfta-bouncer. The appliance is available from the repository for public download under an open source license. Downloadable client SDKs are available in .NET, Java and Python. The API specifications can be exported in Open API 3.0, RAML 1.0 and Swagger 2.0.

Bouncer exposes a RESTful API that enables organizations to dynamically block and unblock malicious traffic based on IPv4 address or geolocation. It can be used to block inbound and outbound traffic, preventing intrusion, reverse-shell remote access, data exfiltration and lateral movement inside enterprise network segments. Written in Python, it is available for physical or virtual deployment on a LINUX OS. Changes to the firewall’s database are implemented every minute. Bouncer uses a geolocation database which is updated periodically from http://lite.ip2location.com/. Bouncer is ready for high-load scenarios, it operates through the UFW firewall. NMFTA has internally deployed Bouncer on a Linux OS running on pfSense hardware.

NMFTA developed the tool to strengthen organizational cyber posture through dynamic and intelligent defense. We hope that organizations interested in building their own virtual or physical appliance will join us in supporting this project and further its development to the benefit of all.
