SUMMARY:Securing the Future of Heavy Vehicle Cybersecurity – The CyberTruck Challenge
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, May 8\, 2025\, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA)™ cybersecurity team hosted the Securing the Future of Heavy Vehicle Cybersecurity – The CyberTruck Challenge. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAccess Recording\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nThe CyberTruck Challenge is the premier hands-on training event dedicated to equipping the next generation of cybersecurity professionals in the heavy vehicle industry. Endorsed by several leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)\, this initiative provides students with real-world problem-solving experiences\, mentorship from industry experts\, and practical cybersecurity training tailored to the trucking sector. For many years\, the NMFTA has been the premier sponsor of the CyberTruck Challenge. We’ve covered the costs of airfare\, lodging\, and meals for all attending students to ensure the workforce of tomorrow is prepared for the ever-changing landscape of cybersecurity. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWhat You’ll Learn: \n\n\n\n\nThe Mission of the CyberTruck Challenge – How it prepares students to tackle cybersecurity threats in heavy vehicles.\n\n\n\nHands-On Training Opportunities – An overview of the skills and techniques participants gain during the event.\n\n\n\nIndustry Collaboration & Support – Insights into how OEMs and industry leaders contribute to this initiative.\n\n\n\nWorkforce Development Impact – The role of the CyberTruck Challenge in building a skilled cybersecurity workforce.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy establishing a community that transcends company boundaries\, the CyberTruck Challenge helps create a more experienced and capable workforce dedicated to securing the future of heavy vehicle cybersecurity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Your Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarl Heimer has been associated with the automotive cybersecurity domain since 2011\, approaching it from the red team/cybersecurity side rather than as an automotive insider and coming to that industry from his background in DOD.He founded the CyberAuto Challenge in 2012 to help excite and educate the next generation workforce about possible careers in automotive cybersecurity and has founded or co-founded several specific related events to draw attention to and generate interest in other environments critical to our way of life and with a strong embedded cybersecurity component. These include CyberTruck Challenge (heavy road vehicles)\, CyberBoat Challenge (maritime)\, CyberDrone Challenge (UAS)\, CyberMedical Challenge (medical devices)\, and he assisted John Deere in creating the CyberTractor Challenge (agriculture). He is currently working with DOE to begin the CyberInfrastructure Challenge (electrical and non-electrical systems)\, with engineers form the UK in extending the CyberAuto Challenge to the UK market\, and beginning the initial lift on two other events (one on Earth and the other not on Earth – you’ll have to listen to the talk). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoe Ohr has more than two decades of experience in technical operations\, customer success management\, IT\, customer support\, and product support.  \n\n\n\nCurrently serving as the Chief Operating Officer for the National Motor Freight Traffic Association\, Inc. (NMFTA)\, he plays a pivotal role in helping to advance the industry through digitization\, classification\, and cybersecurity.   \n\n\n\nPrior to Ohr’s role at NMFTA\, he served as in numerous IT\, engineering\, and operations positions at Qualcomm and Eaton\, and most recently held the position of Senior Vice President of Operations/Customer Experience at Omnitracs.   \n\n\n\nThroughout his career\, Ohr has provided strategic guidance\, vision\, and a roadmap for addressing long-term customer challenges. He has played a key role in accelerating revenue growth and has collaborated closely with IT\, product\, and engineering teams to foster stronger partnerships with strategic customers and peers. Additionally\, Ohr has overseen post sales customer support and service teams\, as well as operations\, managing a workforce of over 400 individuals.  \n\n\n\nHe holds multiple certifications such as CCNA from Cisco and MCSE from Microsoft and earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from the Ohio State University. Due to his contributions to the industry\, he earned a spot in the Inner Circle in 2015 and 2018 from Qualcomm and Omnitracs.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnne Zachos is a Cybersecurity Research Engineer at the National Motor Freight Traffic Association\, Inc. (NMFTA).  \n\n\n\nAt NMFTA\, Anne takes a lead role in advancing cybersecurity within the trucking industry\, focusing on contributing to both research initiatives and educational efforts. Her commitment to staying at the forefront of emerging technologies positions her as a forward-thinking professional ready to make meaningful contributions to the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity.   \n\n\n\nAnne is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Her academic focus included cybersecurity\, with a particular interest in embedded systems and reverse engineering.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBen Gardiner is a Senior Cybersecurity Research Engineer contractor at the National Motor Freight Traffic Association\, Inc. (NMFTA) specializing in hardware and low-level software security. With more than ten years of professional experience in embedded systems design and a lifetime of hacking experience\, Ben has a deep knowledge of the low-level functions of operating systems and the hardware with which they interface.
